How Sweden can become the best in industrial AI

The biggest challenge for companies that want to get started with AI is to identify where it can deliver the greatest benefit and then develop a road map for integration into existing processes, asserts Ramin Karim, who is an expert in industrial AI and professor at Luleå University of Technology. He was speaking ahead of this autumn’s Scanautomatic, the meeting place for the Nordic digital transformation and automation sector.

Ramin Karim emphasises that companies wanting to develop in AI must identify their knowledge needs, train existing staff and recruit new talent.

– It’s important to integrate AI across the value chain, but we can start in small steps without waiting for big disruptive changes, he says
Cooperation between politics, industry and academia will help to improve the business environment, he says.

– Technology is evolving faster than the regulatory framework, which needs to adapt.

Report of the AI Commission

The Swedish government has set up an AI Commission, which will release its first report this autumn. This could result in an industrial AI agenda and create consensus among stakeholders.

– A roadmap would facilitate AI strategies and capital management, but would also support politicians in creating the necessary conditions for business, says Ramin Karim.
Stefan Engelbrektsson is business manager for Scanautomatic and the parallel meeting place ProcessTeknik. After visiting several German trade fairs and closely following industry developments, he concluded that the use of AI, which often receives special attention in Germany, also needs a forum in the Nordic region.

– Sweden has lacked a central forum for AI in the automation and process industry. We are changing that by launching such a forum for AI and its application in industrial digitalisation at Scanautomatic.

A space for networking and seminars is being created in the “Ny Teknik AI Arena”, which is organised together with the industry magazine, Ny Teknik. Among other things, workshops in Copilot are being organised here by Microsoft.

Practical AI applications

Many companies have made some progress with AI while others still need more knowledge. Industrial AI can be used in many areas, such as logistics, diagnostics, simulation and cybersecurity.
AI plays an important role in hyperautomation to optimise processes and improve inventory management, as well as identifying training needs and creating tailored training programmes.

Ramin sees Scanautomatic as an opportunity for academia to present research and discuss future needs in industry. He underlines that the rapid development of AI can make industry more efficient and sustainable, but the execution of AI is energy intensive.

– Sustainability aspects of AI must be taken into account, but saying no to AI is not possible, as it creates so many business opportunities.
Ramin clarifies the two different perspectives:

– We want Sweden to be the best AI producer, not the biggest consumer of AI.

About Scanautomatic

Scanautomatic is the Nordic region’s leading meeting place for industrial automation and digital transformation. It takes place on 8-10 October at the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre in Gothenburg, in parallel with ProcessTeknik. This year has a dedicated forum for AI: “Ny Teknik AI Arena.”
